Is the gym for you a personal challenge, a maintenance ritual, a social space, or all of the above? For many gay men, the relationship with the body and training is complex – it can be a source of confidence, but also of additional pressure to meet a certain aesthetic ideal.
Do "gay gyms" exist? Officially, rarely, but some become de facto gay gathering spots, which creates a unique dynamic. On one hand, it can be a safe space where you can focus without homophobic stares; on the other, a space where flirting and judging can become a new source of anxiety. Motivations vary: health, appearance, mental liberation, and even the desire to be "seen" and fit in.
What is expected? There's often a stereotype that all gay men are obsessed with the perfect body and that the gym is their temple. The reality is much broader: some seek community in team sports, others in yoga or running, while others see the gym as merely a functional tool. Do you like "toned guys"? Answers range from "yes, that's my type" to "it doesn't matter to me, chemistry is what counts."
Open your training diary. Where do you train and why there? Has the gym become a social space for you? How do you feel under the gaze of others? What are your best and worst gym stories?
