MRAK at Dragstor: Beneath the Surface of Darkness

Share Article:

When you hear the name "Mrak" (Darkness), you expect a certain atmosphere – and Dragstor, as a club housed in a former slaughterhouse, is the perfect setting for such a theme. However, the latest MRAK party reveals that darkness can be more layered than it first appears – and not always in the way you might hope.

Musical Architecture

The party unfolds across two stages, with a DJ lineup that satisfies techno enthusiasts. The musical side is fine, but the sound system left me wanting: I had expected the sound to be more precisely distributed, rather than feeling like it was coming from a single source. It's not that the sound was bad – technically, it works – I just expected more. The effects and lighting are on point, but even they don't quite compensate for that sense that something is missing.

The Largest Darkroom in the City

What sets this party apart is unquestionably the largest darkroom in Belgrade, operating throughout the entire event. It's a space where there's almost no light, and the music from the main stage seeps in as a background matrix. This element is polarising: you're either into it or you're not. Open, sometimes rougher encounters without prior conversation can be too intense for those who prefer a more conventional approach. For those seeking exactly that – this is an authentic experience rarely offered on such a scale.

Atmosphere and Crowd

I find it hard to define my impression. It's not that I disliked the party – but it's not that I liked it either. The music is decent, the space works, the people are there. Yet, the atmosphere lacks some elusive element. Maybe it's about the number of attendees, maybe the energy in the space, or maybe something else that's harder to articulate. What's interesting is the demographic: the party isn't strictly "gay" – women come too, adding another dimension to the scene. The crowd is mixed in terms of age, suggesting that Mrak attracts different generations of nightlife explorers.

Verdict

MRAK at Dragstor has its audience – that's clear. The party is honest about what it offers and doesn't pretend to be something it's not. But would I go again? Probably not, at least not to this format. It's not a bad experience, but it's not one I'd actively seek out either. If you're curious and ready to explore boundaries, it's worth a try – maybe it's exactly your scene. For me, I'm left with an ambivalent impression: I respect what the party is trying to do, but I'm not part of its target audience.
